Millipeds in South Africa

I just registred to show some photos of millipeds from South Africa.

I visited the country in December 2006, mostly to photograph the dragonfly fauna, but also found two species of millipeds.

Also I have contact with a person from South Africa, who have photographed three species. Identification of the species is highly welcomed, and the pictures can be used in the "tropical section" of this site, if the moderators want to.

Here is the first of my photos. an about 15 cm long dark milliped, photographed in Limpopo region of South Africa.

Here a closeup of the same animal:

This first species was photographed on a dirt road about 1700 meters above sea level. Just of the road, I found two other millipeds of another species.

Here are three other pictures by the South African , Joan Y.

A bright red one:

A black and red one:

And finally a brownish one:

Hello and Welcome here Erland,
The first one is most certainly a Archispirostreptus Gigas.
I thinkk the red ones are centrobolus splendidus.
The others I have never seen before.
To find out what species that can be,you need some pics of uncurled millipedes, where you can see details of the head and the back.

Greetings
Maria

They are very cool! Thanks for showing us and please show more if you can. I thought A. gigas lived in more humid tropical places in africa though? ?(

I overlooked this Thread. Beautyful pedes 8o

The first one could be A. gigas which is distributed in the Kruger National Park.
The second one seems to be a undescribed species of the order Spirobolida, maybe belonging to the genus Hadrobolus.
The red one could be C. splendidus but first segment (collum) is not visible at the pic and important for indentification.
The rough one is a member of the Spirostreptidae, but exact identification is not possible by the picture.
The last one is a member of the Harpagophoridae.

Hi again. Sorry 'bout my late reply.

Thank you all for comments and your view on the species shown.
I will now be able to make some better photos, should I find more millipeds in the future. Hopefully I will do a trip to South Africa again very soon.
The two first pictures show my first encounters ever with millipeds. They are a really interesting subjects.
I will let Joan know that more replies have been added to this thread, she might not have seen them.
