Mites: Ok/Not OK?

  • Which mites are bad. I now have lots of little mites everywhere. I do not want to replace the substrate and i wonder if it is necessary. How can I tell if they are harmful?

  • Hi,
The majority of occuring mites in keeping are not harmful to the millipedes. But it is uncertain if some mites may eat the eggs of the millipedes when food is rare. The mites are introduced by substrate or dog-/catfood and feed on the rotting material (plant or animal origin) and can reach high population numbers. If you avoid that the food (cocumber, mice ;)) rests there more than one day and if you keep them (A. gigas) more dry you could get the mites away after some time.

  • Hmm, I am not feeding them much besides the substrate. If I put much food in, it is not all eaten but if I put a little in, it is eaten quickly. Since I am wanting babies, I was keeping the cage wet. How much wetness do the babies need? Also, does anyone have a picture of the bad mites?
